“The mind is a wonderful servant but a terrible master. If you have become a negative thinker; this is because you have not cared for your mind and taken the time to train it to focus on the good.”
The above quote by Robin S. Sharma is the key learning that I hope you take from this blog; you can train your mind to focus on anything. Your mind is a powerful tool but when you allow your mind to run the show, your mind will never choose to focus on the good. Your mind is programmed to focus on potential scenarios that could cause you suffering in the hope to keep you safe; that is what is was designed to do. Therefore, positive thinking is something you need to work on, each and every day. It is a vital habit that you need to form.
I recently read “The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari” by Robin S. Sharma [blog on this to follow shortly] and this book was a real game changer. ‘The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari’ is “a fable about fulfilling your dreams and reaching your destiny” and it has taught me some fundamentally mind altering lessons. Sharma teaches many valuable techniques throughout the book; however, one technique that I have incorporated into my daily life is what he calls ‘Opposition Thinking’.
Sharma explains that the mind is truly like any other muscle in the body: “Use it or lose it”. You need to train your mind the same as you would train your legs or your arms.
“If you want to toughen up your leg muscles, you must first exert them. Similarly, your mind will do wonderful things for you, if only you will let it. It will attract all that you desire into your life, once you learn how to operate it effectively.”
For me, mastering my thoughts, my anxieties and my sometimes destructive imagination, has been my biggest challenge. In the past, I have become so overrun with anxiety that I have not been able to silence my mind long enough to breathe properly. I have spent a lot of time investing in mastering my thoughts, and in turn my mind, and I cannot tell you what an invaluable impact this has had upon my life.
Winston Churchill is quoted saying: “The price of greatness is responsibility over each of your thoughts.” This is unequivocally important to learn; it is your responsibility to maintain your mind. It is an operating system, so look after it like you would a valuable laptop. If you want greatness, you need to learn to manage your most vital asset. Trust me, it really works! Ever since I have made a conscious daily effort to acknowledge, edit and replace my thoughts with beneficial and positive thoughts, I have noticed that my mind has become a far more peaceful place to be.
Mastering the technique
The fable elaborates that “a particularly good technique for ridding the mind of worry and other negative, life-draining influences is based on … Opposition Thinking.” He explains:
“The process is straightforward: when an undesirable thought occupies the focal point of your mind, immediately replace it with an uplifting one. It’s as if your mind is a giant slide projector, with every thought in your mind being a slide. Whenever a negative slide comes up on the screen, take swift action to replace it with a positive one.”
As a way to remind me to do this, I have set up a reminder on my phone called “Opposition thinking” that shows on my phone at 9am every day and remains there all day until I mark it as complete at the end of the day. It acts as a constant reminder all day on my lock screen that I need to remain aware and ready to change the slide at any moment. Try it. You’d be surprised how quickly you can create habit of positive thinking without you even realising it.
“Thoughts are vital, living things, little bundles of energy, if you will. Most people don’t give any thought to the nature of their thoughts and yet, the quality of your thinking determines the quality of your life. Thoughts are as much part of the material world as the lake you swim in or the street you walk on. Weak minds lead to weak actions.”
If you can master your thoughts, there literally isn’t anything you cannot do. Listen to any successful person in this world, any motivational video on YouTube; they all say undisputedly that your mind is where the battle starts!
“Sit up straight, breathe deeply and train the power of your mind on positive thoughts.”
Change begins in your mind
If you want to see change in your life; first start on your thoughts. Acknowledge, edit and change. You can train your mind to see the good in everything; you just have to form a daily habit.
“A strong disciplined mind, which anyone can cultivate through daily practice, can achieve miracles. If you want to live life to the fullest, care for your thoughts as you would your most prized possessions.”
There is nothing more important than a strong, well-mastered mind.
You can start now – don’t wait.
